چکیده

Radiological concerns from airborne radionuclides produced in the air region of the collimation section of the NLC Beam Delivery System were evaluated. The worker exposure during access after accelerator shutdown and the general public dose from radioactivity released to environment through ventilation system were studied. The FLUKA Monte Carlo code was used to calculate the fluence of particles (photon, neutron, proton and pion) in the air region. The production of activities for H, Be, C, N, O, and Ar was then estimated by folding the particle fluence with various nuclear cross sections. Under the operational condition of twelve accesses per year, the activity concentrations of radionuclides at the end of 1-month operation were compared with the corresponding Derived Air Concentration limits. Assuming that the air activity was released to a meteorological and ecological environment that is the same as SLAC, the effluent dose to the general public was estimated with the CAP88 computer code using conservative and realistic input parameters. The results show that, with a 500-GeV, 10kW beam loss at collimator section, the radiological consequence from the air activation was found to be minor. The main concern comes from the short-half-life radioisotopes of N and O (produced mainly by photons) and Ar (produced mainly by thermal neutron). The hazards can be mitigated by means of decay (e.g., wait one hour prior to entry to tunnel or the operation of ventilation system) or adding local shielding.

Single-bunch Electron Cloud Effects in the Glc/nlc, Us-cold and Tesla Low Emittance Transport Lines*

This paper examines the severity of the electron cloud effects in the Low Emittance Transport (LET) of linear colliders including the Bunch-Compressor System (BCS) and Beam Delivery System (BDS). We examine the electron cloud effects in the normal-conducting GLC/NLC or X-Band, and the super-conducting US-Cold and TESLA linear collider designs through the use of specially developed computer simu...

NLC Failure Resistant Sector Design

• The NLC will not be damaged by the sudden failure a a klystron “8-pack”. This is probably true except possibly for some upstream sectors. • The NLC can operate normally (after energy tuning) with 1/2 of the gradient in a single sector disabled. This relates to the allowance for spare tubes in the linac. • The NLC can operate with 1/2 of the Quads in a sector (FD pairs) turned off. This assump...

Modeling of carbon monoxide dispersion around the urban tunnel portals

The aim of this study is to investigate the problems caused by discharge of polluted air from tunnels into the environment with a specific focus on residential areas. In city tunnels, portal or stacks, pollutant management is a big challenge. Nowadays, air quality management, particularly in urban tunnels, is considered as a part of the ventilation system design. The goal is to see the environm...

Vibrational Stability of Glc/nlc Linear Collider: Status and R&d Plans*

Multiple feedback systems are foreseen to ensure stable luminosity for the X-band linear collider. Beam-based train-by-train steering feedbacks will be used in the linac and at the IP. Active stabilization of the final doublet is being developed to counteract the possibility of excessive vibration from the detector. Another option is fast intratrain feedback that could recover a major part of t...
